Potgun
Earthenware, w 30cm
I have a very large gun, it's 30 cm long and
it looks the business.
The gun is a universal symbol of masculine
aggression and power. As boys we adopt the
gun as a representation of the manhood we
aspire to.
Heroic figures from the movies like Clint
Eastwood/ James Bond/ Jack Bauer caricature
our need for a role model of a man who always
wins, is always effective in whatever he does
- in other words the embodiment of potency.
This ideal is all the more important to us
because it so often contrasts with our effectiveness
in our own lives. I think this myth of the
super-hero male is worth looking at, it has
some value to men and boys and anyone trying
to understand them, whether it's taken at
face value or with an understanding of it's
mythical status.
No person or animal was hurt in the making
of this sculpture. The clay got a thorough
beating however, luckily it took it like a
man. |
