Carafe
Earthenware, h 20cm
This sculpture is a development of the still-life
motif although the only surviving recognisable
element is the wine bottle.
The image is of a first world war howitzer
canon, something I gleaned from TV documentaries
as a child.
This abandoned weapon is simultaneously
heroic-aggressive and tragic-pathetic (as
surely is any deadly weapon).
The first world war was notable for the
way it destroyed the youth and hope of a
generation. Any war requires that participants
on at least one side are convinced that
a military victory is possible and desirable
and that the risk of personal, community
and national disaster which so commonly
occurs is worth taking. The fact that wars
are always disastrous is repeatedly overlooked
in favour of the siren voices of heroism
and victory.
