Footballer in the buff
Buff earthenware
h18cm
This diminutive but well built stylized figure
made of buff stoneware clay, is so carried
away by the game he is playing he has not
bothered to get dressed. The figure is shown
mid flight, poised to take a swing at the
ball.
This sculpture started off as an almost abstract
dancer and gradually became more and more
realistic and turned into a footballer as
I worked on it.
It is traditional in sculpture that figures
are naked so you can admire both the beauty
of their bodies and the skill of the artist
in depicting it. Please judge for yourself
on both counts... It is not traditional to
play football in the buff because you could
get hurt, or more hurt than usual, so please
don't try this at home.
