I tried to make something ugly but failed

Earthenware,

This experiment in the context and scale
of my work is part of a process whereby
my work becomes more like installations
and less like individual sculptures. This
signifies a change in my thinking and the
way I expect it to be seen and understood
(or not).
The individual units remain small but are
physically connected by thread so that they
occupy the space they are in as a group
rather than as individual artistic statements.
The work is much more demanding and is much
less likely to be mistaken for something
practical or representational although echoes
of both remain.
I presented this work on my uncleared desk.
The desk was arranged so it was not a clean
blank space, I half cleared it and half
hid the tools and pots of slip and glaze
I work with. The result was an incognito
sculpture, it was completely ambiguous whether
it was a bit of old junk that had been left
around or if it was on display. There were
clues, like the title label and a price
tag, there was a plinth/stand in the middle
of my desk and there was the red silk thread
joining it all together, also each element
includes an object on a ceramic stand or
plinth. If anything the piece is a maquette
or a rehersal for forthcoming projects.
